Like many nations of the world, Trinidad and Tobago will recognize World Diabetes Day on November 14th 2009. Based on the fact that children and by extension teenagers suffer with diabetes our Port of Spain Young Adult Library will host a World Diabetes Day Teen Talk where a diabetic teenager, her mother and her support group will facilitate.

This Teen Talk takes place on Friday 13th November, 2009 from 3:00p.m. to 5:00p.m. at the Port of Spain Young Adult Library. The main guest speaker is sixteen year old Thetis Barton.

The aim of this is to assist persons to make informed decisions both in terms of living with diabetes, living with someone who has diabetes or as Mrs. Mason Barton puts it, to assist everyone to eat and live better.

This World Diabetes Day Teen Talk will provide crucial information from for four perspectives, that of survivor and valiant fighter, Thetis Barton, her mother Mrs. Alison Mason Barton, Nurse Lisa Roberts, the leader of the Diabetics Support Group and NALIS’ online and print resources. It is apparent that to diabetics, teenagers and other, that a shared support system is one of the critical elements which ensures the coping ability to manage diabetes.

About Thetis Barton

Thetis is a very pretty and intelligent young lady with a deep sense of spirituality. She attends St. Francois College and looks like the average teenager to the unknowing onlooker. She was diagnose with diabetes approximately twelve years ago and has been on insulin since that time. One of the challenges she faces is having to take insulin on a daily basis, but as her mother indicates, her mandatory diet has helped the entire family to eat well.

The Diabetic Association also has a schedule of activities to commemorate this day, it includes:

• A Walk through our Capital of Port of Spain where addresses will be made by The Minister of Health, Our First Lady who is the Patron of the Association and a Representative for PAHO.
• Outreach Programmes which consist of blood sugar testing, cholesterol testing, counseling and lecturing.

NALIS is pleased to advise that National Library Week celebrations were held from October 4th – 10th 2009. This year’s theme was Get In @ Your Library – Broaden Your Horizons.

Special programmes and activities were planned for the week. The week of activities began on Sunday 4th October at 1:30 p.m., with the Third Annual Celebrity Tale-A-Thon which was hosted in the Amphitheatre, National Library. Dora the Explorer, Papa Bois and other popular characters were present. Games included Scrabble, Wheel-of-Fortune and Pictionary. Other fun activities included puppetry, craft, face painting and many other events.

Other activities hosted at libraries throughout the country included the All Inclusive Assistive Technology, Caribbean Research Workshop, the opening of the Women’s Prison Library, Careers in Library and Information Science, the Biggest Bedtime Story Ever and many more.
